The Signs of a Car Exhaust Leak

January 19, 2024

A car exhaust leak is dangerous. Aside from operational issues, it also creates a major safety hazard by releasing toxic and odorless fumes into the cabin. Do not hesitate to bring your vehicle to an auto service if you suspect a leak.

3 Signs of a Car Exhaust Leak

Lower MPG

A leak causes engine pressure fluctuation. This affects the oxygen sensor and in turn may decrease the total MPG by two to three miles.

Louder Engine Noise

Does the vehicle sound louder than usual when you accelerate? The increased engine roar may sound nice, but it’s having a negative effect. This is likely an indication of a leak near the exhaust manifold.

Vibrations

Do you feel a vibration in the steering wheel or pedal? A leak causes the escaped gas to enter into the steering mechanism, causing a light but noticeable vibration.

CONSEQUENCES OF A LEAKY EXHAUST

Noxious fumes like nitrogen oxide and carbon monoxide can enter the cabin causing dizziness, headaches, nausea, and fatigue. In extreme cases, the poisoning can lead to death. This was tragically the case in 2014 when two Pennsylvanian teens died after an undetected exhaust leak caused carbon monoxide to enter the enclosed cabin.

In addition to the dangers, a leak can also be harmful for the car by causing engine backfiring. Escaped fumes that mix with the air creates backpressure, resulting in a backfire that reduces engine performance and hurts fuel economy.

Oil acts as the main lubricant for the moving parts in your car’s engine. It prevents the mechanical parts from undergoing excessive wear and tear. Its function is crucial to the smooth operation of the engine. So keeping the right amount of oil in the engine is important for ensuring that your car is continues to run properly. Purpose of Motor Oil Motor oil reduces the level of friction between the various moving parts that make up the engine. If friction between these parts becomes too much the parts will heat up, swell and bind. Good lubricants help keep the engine‘s temperature under control. The oil continuously circulates throughout the engine. The oil filter helps to remove impurities that have been created during combustion. Why your Car Nee ... read more

Most modern vehicles no longer contain a spare tire. While alternatives are available, we still recommend having a spare tire in the trunk as an added safety measure. Summer, after all, is just right around the corner; this is the season of tire blowouts Why Cars No Longer Have a Spare Tire Most car manufacturers no longer include a spare tire to keep the weight down. The extra tire, along with the required jack and wrench, adds an additional 30 to 50 pounds to the car. The spare is also placed below the undercarriage of the car. Keeping that space open reduces air drag, thereby increasing aerodynamics. Hybrid cars are also more common today. Hybrid models usually have less trunk space because the battery and electric components take up that space. T ... read more

What is with all the hype behind synthetic oil? Does it really enhance engine performance and prolong the car’s life? We’ll explain how synthetic oil is made and whether it’s really superior to conventional motor oil. Synthetic Oil: What Exactly Is It? Synthetic oil is a lubricant made from artificial chemical compounds. This is different from regular motor oil, which is normally derived from crude oil. The synthetic variety is produced by altering the compounds of conventional motor oil or other naturally-occurring raw materials. How Is Synthetic Oil Better? Synthetic oil is thinner and more adept at resisting temperature extremes. You may not notice an improvement in your car’s performance, but it certainly helps reduce oil degradation, thereby re ... read more
