Summer is winding down. Schools in the Kent area will resume within a few weeks’ time. This means the roads will be dotted with school buses. Traffic rules are very strict regarding driver behavior when driving behind a school bus. The road rules are simple, but many commuters pay heavy fines because they drive past a bus when they’re supposed to stop.
If the lights in the rear and front of the bus are flashing red, and a stop sign pops out from the side of the bus, then you must stop. Period! This applies to ALL cars behind the bus regardless of the lane. Sometimes, the flashing lights will flash yellow before turning red. This is a warning for you to prepare to stop.
Here is another traffic law most drivers are unaware of: ALL drivers from the opposite road must also come to a halt. The only exception to this rule is if the road has a median separation or barrier dividing the opposing lanes.
In all scenarios, do not resume driving until the bus starts moving again. Also, if you see kids entering or exiting the bus, then you must stop even if the lights are not flashing and the stop sign is not showing.
Back-to-school-time is important for another reason. This is also a good time for auto servicing. Some motorists switch out their summer tires. Others want a professional inspection to ensure the car is safe for the daily drop off of their kids.
